Writing & Publishing Support

Below are various publishing fee discounts available to the Upstate community. Please note that these discounts are obtained through vendor agreements and subject to change.

ASM has adopted a Subscribe to Open (S2O) subscription model for its six primary research journals. Those journals are:

• Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
• Applied and Environmental Microbiology
• Infection and Immunity
• Journal of Bacteriology
• Journal of Clinical Microbiology
• Journal of Virology

This will include no article processing charges (APC) for Upstate affiliated authors publishing open access in these journals in 2025. This agreement is reevaluated annually.

Upstate authors are entitled to a 15% discount with BioMed Central.

The BioMed Central (BMC) discount is part of Upstate's membership in BMC. After editorial acceptance, there will be an option to note your affiliation with Upstate in order to be eligible for the discount.

Per BMC, the member discount is applicable to BMC and Springer fully open access journals only, and does not apply to any Nature Research, Palgrave, or Springer Nature hybrid open access (Open Choice) journals.

The cost of the article processing charge is covered. When you are ready to submit your work, email library@upstate.edu to get the BMJ fellowship code.

The article processing charge is covered for all Cambridge journals that accept Open Access publishing. 

The corresponding author must have valid Upstate credentials. To find out more and see which titles are included, visit https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/open-access-policies/waivers-discounts. Enter "United States" and then "SUNY Upstate Medical University."

Elsevier and the State University of New York (SUNY) have established an agreement to support affiliated authors who wish to publish open access.

The cost of publishing open access is reduced 10% under the terms of this agreement. Eligible corresponding authors receive a discount on the article publishing charge (APC).

MDPI offers institutions and consortia the opportunity to join over 900 institutions on our Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP), which provides transparency to the MDPI submission process, and a discount on Article Processing Charges (APC) for affiliated researchers.

• 10% discount on Article Processing Charges (APCs) for all affiliate authors (based on designated email domains)

• 10% discount on Book Processing Charges (BPCs)
• 15% discount on Author Services (e.g., English Editing Services)
