SUNY Open Access Policy: Get Started

Draft and adopt an open access policy.

In March of 2018, the SUNY Trustees charged all state-run SUNY campuses with the development and implementation an open access policy that recognizes each campuses' unique mission and culture, utilizes a process that follows local faculty governance procedures, and includes the faculty, student, and staff protections and best practices identified in the Trustees' memorandum.

This guide was developed to support the process at Upstate Medical University, but most of the information is relevant to all SUNY campuses.

Open Access Policy and Implementation Toolkit
(Upstate Medical Library, Wendi Ackerman, MLS, CAPM)

This Toolkit contains a blank project planning template and guidance for using it effectively, including examples specific to implementing a campus open access policy. it is based on the Project Management Institute's (PMI) project planning framework and goes beyond a schedule of work to include stakeholder, risk and communications management, and other resources. These planning tools are meant to be adapted or scaled as needed  (use what fits) for various campus environments.  Download to open in MS Word.
