Academic Honesty, Ethical Citation Practices, and Plagiarism
Upstate Medical University upholds the highest standards of academic integrity. In order to meet these standards and protect themselves from potential pitfalls, both students and faculty should be aware of Upstate's stance on academic dishonesty and plagiarism, as stated in the Student Handbook.
Plagiarism tools
Turnitin.com TurnItIn compares submitted assignments against a set of academic papers in several different databases to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works. It is used to prevent plagiarism and to create opportunities to help students identify how to properly attribute sources. TurnItIn is available and integrated into Brightspace.
Faculty members interested in learning how to use TurnItin should contact Kristen Flint in Educational Communications.
iThenticate (For College of Graduate Studies students) Upstate has purchased a license for iThenticate for students in the College of Graduate Studies. iThenticate is online software for plagiarism detection and prevention, used to verify the originality of written work before publication. It is for use by faculty and researchers publishing articles in refereed journals. TurnItIn is more appropriate for classwork.
Questions about the use of iThenticate should be directed to Jeff Wessel in Educational Communications.
