What is Copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U.S. Code) to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works.

Exceptions to Copyright Law
Exceptions to Copyright Law include:
- PUBLIC DOMAINitems not protected by copyright law due to ineligibility, author intent, or status.
- CREATIVE COMMONSlicensing service which enables creators to permit use of an item according to the terms of their choice of creative commons licenses.
- OPEN ACCESScopyrighted items made available at no charge by the publisher. Link preferred even though PDF is available to all.
- OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCEScopyrighted instructional items you are given permission to use by the creator.
- FAIR USEsection of copyright law permitting use of copyrighted material (without permission) under certain circumstances, e.g. education.
