Accessing Resources Using OpenAthens

When trying to access Library managed resources (databases, journals, ebooks... etc) regardless of whether you are on campus or off campus, you will be prompted to log in using your SUNY Upstate credentials through OpenAthens via Citrix. 

How do I access electronic resources through OpenAthens? 

  • Navigate the library web site to find resources. 
  • When you click on a licensed resource (ie database, journal article, ebook, etc.) that will take you to the publisher's website, a new page will open from login.openathens.net prompting you for a user ID and password.

Upstate Student, Staff or Faculty members:

For those users who have Upstate issued usernames and passwords, and can use Groupwise, iPage and other campus based services requiring a personal user account.

  • Select Upstate Users - Citrix Login

  • Enter your Upstate provided username and password on the Citrix login page

  • Once you enter the proper credentials, the web site will take you to the selected library resource. 
  • If this your first time visiting a publisher using OpenAthens, it is very likely that you will be prompted to accept a privacy policy.
    • For some publishers, you must accept the policy in order to view the full text.

Upstate Affiliated Users:

  • For those without Upstate Novell or Groupwise accounts and have applied for access to Library Resources, select OpenAthens

Log in using the OpenAthens account type

  • Enter the OpenAthens username and password provided by library staff. Most accounts may also use their email address that is associated with their OpenAthens account (e.g. "yourusername@upstate.edu").

Sign in with an OpenAthens account

  • Once you enter the proper credentials, the web site will take you to the selected library resource. 
  • If this your first time visiting a publisher using OpenAthens, it is very likely that you will be prompted to accept a privacy policy.
    • For some publishers, you must accept the policy in order to view the full text.

What is my user ID and password for Open Athens?

Students & Upstate Employees With Novell/Groupwise Accounts 

Use your Upstate issued ID and Password. It is the same as you would use for your email, Self-Serve, Banner, Blackboard, Epic or any other campus login. 

Don't know your Network ID password? Please call the Computer Help Desk at 315-464-4115 to have it reset. 

Students: your Network ID is the username you received to access your Upstate email account.  

 

Other Upstate Affiliates & Library Users 

Use your OpenAthens account ID and Password. These credentials are provided via an email from OpenAthens when you initially activated your account. Make sure to use the "upsm" prefix, as this is how OpenAthens identifies your user account from other institutions within the OpenAthens Federation. When creating a password, please abide by OpenAthens' password guideleines

Passwords are case sensitive, must be between 8 and 20 characters long and contain a mixture of letters and non-letters, passwords can’t include the username or have consecutive numbers.
