Teaching and Learning Resources for Educators

Resources to help you stay current in the field of healthcare education.

What is the Community of Preceptors?

The Community of Preceptors is a collaborative program offering resources and opportunities for a community of practice for physicians and other health professions teaching faculty at Upstate Medical University. The program was launched in 2022 with a series of virtual discussions geared toward supporting clinician-educators. The teaching may occur offsite in clinical settings and/or onsite.  The program is supported by the Upstate Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, with collaboration from United Health Services (UHS) in Binghamton, the Upstate Office of Continuing Medical Education and Upstate's Project ECHO.  For more information or to be included on mailing lists for future sessions, contact racej@upstate

Community of Preceptors Program Objectives:

Create a community of preceptors who share knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching medical and health professions students and residents

Increase comfort and confidence in teaching for clinician-teachers

Support clinician-teachers building stronger relationships to Upstate Medical University

Provide an opportunity for reflection regarding teaching philosophy

Project ECHO: (Extension of Community Healthcare Outcomes)

Project ECHO is a well established model pioneered from the University of New Mexico. Project ECHO has had a national and international reach for the past (almost) 20 years. As part of Upstate's strategic plan launching Project ECHO, a tele-education program, is now in its 5th year of addressing issues of access across Central New York.

The ECHO model breaks down the barriers between specialist and primary care. Our experts at SUNY Upstate will function as the “hub” to deliver education, knowledge and best practices to the primary care clinicians in the Central New York region and beyond.
