Accessibility at the HSL

Explore the Library’s accessibility accommodations for physical spaces, technology, and access to resources.

Accessible Technology

Many accessibility features are integrated into the technology available in the Library. Supplemental technology has been purchased in instances where existing hardware and software are not sufficient. This page will inventory what accessible technology is available and how to access it.

For assistance with Library technology or the website please contact libsuppt@upstate.edu or, for immediate assistance, please visit the Front Desk.

Library computers:

There are four computers on the first floor: two near the entrance, and two in the alcove under the Monumental Staircase. If you do not have Upstate login credentials, ask the Front Desk for assistance. All computers are equipped with:

  • Screen magnification (zoom text)
  • Screen Reader
  • Speech-to-Text
  • Text-to-Speech

These applications can be accessed under the Start Icon > Settings > Ease of Access

Computer labs and classrooms:

Computers in the second-floor computer lab and computer classrooms are maintained by Educational Communications. More information can be found on Ed Comm's website. Contact Ed Comm at 315-464-7911 for assistance.

Printing:

All printing services in the Library are maintained by our Technical Support team. These include:

  • First Floor Printers
  • Printers in the second-floor computer labs/classroom
  • Wireless printing

Large-type signage is posted at all print stations.

Assistive hardware:

Assistive technology is available for checkout at the Front Desk. A valid Upstate ID or Library card is needed to check these items out. No holds are available for assistive technology and a loan period of six hours applies. A renewal can be processed at the Front Desk. Please return all items to the Services Desk.

Library website:

The Library strives to follow accessibility standards and best practices for web design and development. Any digital content provided through the website is created with these standards in mind. This includes our posted policies and procedures, as well as instructional content, tutorials and LibGuides.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. At this time, the Health Sciences Library is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

We are continually working toward improved accessibility and a better user experience. Please let us know if you encounter accessibility barriers on our website or in any part of your library experience. For website issues, we recommend contacting us at libsuppt@upstate.edu. Please see our Contact the Library page for more ways to get in touch with us.
