NIH Public Access Policy @ Upstate

The NIH Public Access Policy

What is the NIH Public Access Policy?

NIH requires that any publication resulting from NIH funding be made accessible to the public through PubMed Central (PMC), its free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature, within 12 months of publication.
(For details, see NIH’s Public Access Policy Homepage).

Why is it important to me?

If your research is supported by any direct funding from NIH, any manuscript resulting from that research must comply with the NIH Public Access Policy.

Failure to comply may result in delayed or denied funding.

Does this apply to my paper?

The Policy applies to any manuscript that is peer-reviewed and accepted for publication in a journal on or after April 7, 2008.

For further information, see Determine Applicability.

What do I need to do?

Follow these three steps to comply with the NIH Public Access Policy:

Step 1: Address Copyright
Step 2: Submit Your Paper
Step 3: Reporting to NIH
