Which article version to submit?

More than 80% of well-established publishers and journals allow a version of an an article to be self-archived on an author's website or a repository.  Sherpa Romeo (SR), part of Jisc, maintains a database of journal open access policy terms and conditions.

After locating the entry for the journal needed, look under Publisher Policy for Open Access pathways. Look for one that includes "Institutional Repository" or "Any Website" in the location.

Pay close attention to which version may be archived. This will often be the Accepted Version, but in some cases the publisher might allow the Published Version, or alternatively might only allow the Submitted Version. Here are Sherpa Romeo's definitions of each version:

Published Version: the publisher-created published version, that has been peer-reviewed and copy edited.

  • Also known as: Final Published Version, Version of Record

Accepted Version: the final author-created version that incorporates referee comments and is the accepted for publication version.

  • Also known as: Authors Accepted Manuscript (AAM), Authors accepted version, Final Author version, Post-print

Submitted Version: the version that has been submitted to a journal for peer review.

  • Also known as: Author's Original Manuscript (AOM), Original manuscript, Pre-print

Also note any Embargos or Conditions; it is not unusual for a journal to require a citation to the published source, and/or a link to the version of record on the publisher's website.
