Ruth S. Weinstock MD PhD received a Masters of Philosophy and a PhD in Human Genetics and Development from Columbia University. She completed her MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1980. She was an intern and resident in internal medicine at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at that institution from 1983-1984. In 1984, she came to Upstate to continue her fellowship and to join the faculty of the Department of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Weinstock was made full Professor in 1995. She has served on the medical staff of Upstate University Hospital since 1986 and was a Staff Physician at the VA hospital in Syracuse from 1986-2012.

Dr. Weinstock is division chief of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Upstate (1994-present), as well as medical director of the Clinical Research Unit (2011-present). Dr. Weinstock founded the Joslin Diabetes Center at Upstate in 1995. The Center is the only comprehensive diabetes program serving more than 25,000 adult and pediatric patients across 20 counties. Under Dr. Weinstock's leadership, Joslin has been designated a Diabetes Center of Excellence by the New York State Department of Health, making it the only hospital-based program between Albany and Buffalo to earn this distinction.

Ruth S. Weinstock MD PhD stands in her officeHer past work with the Veterans Administration at the local and national level led to the development for a new model for diabetes care that was adopted across the VA system. Dr. Weinstock's research accomplishments have kept pace with her clinical achievements, resulting in more than 150 professional publications and five NIH grants.

Dr. Weinstock was the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Clinician Physician in Diabetes Award from the American Diabetes Association and the 2018 winner of the American College of Physicians Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes. She has received the SUNY Research Foundation Award honoring research in Science, Engineering and Medicine (2001), the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities (2006), and was made a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in 2012. She was the editor for Diabetes Care for ten years and served on many NIH review panels.
