Nancy J. Tarbell MD

Dr. Nancy J. Tarbell Dr. Nancy Tarbell, an internationally renowned expert in pediatric radiation oncology, has focused her research on pediatric oncology, specifically, investigating the use of proton radiation therapy in pediatric brain tumors.

Dr. Tarbell is dean of academic and clinical affairs and the C.C. Wang professor of radiation oncology at Harvard Medical School and consistently listed in the Best Doctors of America (Woodward and White). Dr. Tarbell was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2002 and received the Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicines Award of Excellence in 2011. She was awarded a gold medal from the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in 2014 and the Margaret L. Kripke Legend Award from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2018.

Dr. Nancy Tarbell was born in Hudson, MA, in 1951. Dr. Tarbell received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Rhode Island in 1973. Dr. Tarbell completed a pre-med program at Columbia University and received her medical degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse in 1979. Her interest in radiation oncology led to a residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. After the internship, Dr. Tarbell trained at the Harvard Joint Center for Radiation Therapy and Children’s Hospital in Boston where she served as the chief of the division of radiation therapy and became an assistant professor at Massachusetts General Hospital. By 1995 Dr. Tarbell was promoted to full professor and in 2005 was honored with the C.C. Wang professorship. In 2008, Dr. Tarbell became dean for academic and clinical affairs at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tarbell has authored more than 300 original publications that include articles on proton radiotherapy for pediatric tumors and is a co-editor of Pediatric Radiation Oncology.
