Diversity in Medicine and Science at Upstate

Gregory A. Threatte M.D. is a 1973 graduate of the SUNY Upstate College of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society, and he completed a residency in Clinical Pathology at University Hospital. Dr. Threatte was a post-doctoral fellow in Experimental Hematology at the Lawrence Berkley Laboratory in Berkley CA and assistant professor of Pathology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Threatte is board certified in clinical and anatomic pathology and specializes in the treatment of metabolic conditions. He returned to his alma mater in 1986 as associate professor of Pathology, director of Clinical Chemistry, and deputy to the president for Minority Affairs.

In his role with Minority Affairs he was concerned with increasing application and matriculation rates as well as graduation rates for minority students. He was selected for the President’s Award for the Advancement of Affirmative Action in 1992 and the Distinguished Service in the Health Field Award from the National Association of Medical Minority Education, Inc. in 2003. That same year he became chairman of the Department of Pathology. He served as medical director of the University Pathologists Laboratories from 1988-2010 and was director of Laboratories for University Hospital from 2001-2012.

Dr. Threatte was a prized educator, voted the best teacher in Pathology in 1991, 1998 and 2000. He was selected for the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1998. At Georgetown, he was nominated for the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching in both 1984 and 1986.

Dr. Threatte retired in 2012 and is currently professor emeritus of Pathology at Upstate. He is also trustee emeritus for Colgate University and is a trustee for The Commonwealth Medical College. He is a past president of the Onondaga County Medical Society (2008-2009, member since 1997) and of Upstate's Medical Alumni Association (2004-2006, member since 1989).
