Diversity in Medicine and Science at Upstate

This subject guide celebrates diversity at Upstate Medical University by highlighting individuals who have made significant contributions to Upstate's mission and to medicine and science in general.

Julio Licinio MD PhD

Photo of Julio Licinio MD PhDJulio Licinio MD PhD completed his doctor of medicine degree in 1982 at the University of Bahia School of Medicine in Brazil, where he was first in his class with a score of 99.76 on the entry exam. His residency in medicine was completed at the University of Sao Paulo Medical Center in 1984 and then he moved to the United States for a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. An internship in psychiatry took Dr. Licinio to the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in the Bronx, NY in 1985 and in 1986 he moved on to New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center’s Westchester Division for a three year residency in psychiatry.

Dr. Licinio's nearly thirty year career in academic medicine most recently saw him at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute where he served as deputy director of translation strategy and process and as the head of the Mind and Brain Theme. He was simultaneously the Matthew Finders Distinguished Professor at Flinders University, also located in Adelaide Australia. He completed his PhD at Flinders University in 2017.

His work with translational medicine was fundamental to his service at UCLA (1999-2006), the University of Miami (2006-2009) and the Australian National University (2009-2013). The many programs, research projects and institutes he helped to build at these institutions were repeatedly funded by the NIH, including the establishment of the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute, which brought together eight clinical departments and six schools, and the Graduate Training Program in Translational Investigation at the University of Miami, which included a master's degree in translational science.

Dr. Lucinio is board certified in psychiatry, is a Fellow of the Royal and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. As an NIH-funded researcher his focus has been on depression, stress-related circuits, circadian rhythms, genetics, pharmacology, and pharmacogenomics. He has authored 300 publications and is the founding and current editor-in-chief of Molecular Psychiatry, The Pharmacogenomics Journal, and Translational Psychiatry.

Dr. Licinio was appointed senior vice president and dean of the College of Medicine at Upstate on July 1, 2017. He managed the academic activities of the clinical and basic science departments in the College of Graduate Studies. The degree programs offered span from the MD to the PhD and include a Masters in Public Health. Dr. Licinio currently holds faculty appointments in the departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience.
