Diversity in Medicine and Science at Upstate

This subject guide celebrates diversity at Upstate Medical University by highlighting individuals who have made significant contributions to Upstate's mission and to medicine and science in general.

Lawrence S. Chin MD

Headshot of Lawrence S. Chin MD, wearing blue suit and tieLawrence S. Chin MD, FAANS, FACS, received his bachelor's degree and his medical degree with honors from the University of Michigan in 1983 and 1987. His residency in general surgery was completed at the Los Angeles County General Hospital beginning in 1988, and continued post-graduate training in neurological surgery was done at the University of Southern California in 1994.

Dr. Chin has served as professor of neurosurgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and was medical director of the University of Maryland Gamma Knife Center and Maryland Brain Tumor Center from 1996 to 2006. He served as professor and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, as well as assistant dean of diversity and multicultural affairs, at Boston University School of Medicine and as neurosurgeon-in chief at Boston Medical Center from 2006 to 2011.

Dr. Chin was made the Robert B and Molly G. King Endowed Professor and Chair of Neurosurgery at Upstate in 2011. He has served as Chair of the UUMAS Governing Board and this a member of Upstate's Executive Committee. He has made significant contributions to Upstate's educational mission by collaborating on the setting up of the Learning Communities, which have energized and enriched the lives of medical students at Upstate. Dr. Chin served as interim dean for the College of Medicine from September 2019 until January 30, 2020 was he was appointed dean by Interim President Mantosh Dewan, MD.

Dr. Chin is the recipient of numerous honors, awards and visiting professorships and has held a range of leadership positions in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and other organizations. Chin has been an investigator on over twenty research grants. He has published 115 papers, edited a book on stereotactic radiosurgery (now in its second edition), served on and chaired NIH study sections, and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Neurosurgical Focus, Journal of Neuro-Oncology, and World Neurosurgery. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
